State of the Airwaves Address

State of the Airwaves Address
ALL PRAISE THE RADIO KING

This week we discuss the "State of the Airwaves Address"

Meaning we talked about these statistics we found: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/08/17/for-national-radio-day-key-facts-about-radio-listeners-and-the-radio-industry-in-the-us/

  • Most radio journalists feel extremely connected to their audience compared with other media journalists
  • Almost half of all US adults sometimes get news from the radio
  • About 8 in 10 Americans listen to radio in a given week

The "State of the Airwaves Address" is given by the Radio King each year

  • Kinda like a school dance
  • Popularity contest
  • Ranked choice voting
  • Drama!!

Its kinda like a talent show combined with a presidential election. The Radio King is a known fire juggler (the fire juggling party has been really powerful in recent years).

  • Lots of cliques and parties (but everyone is welcoming and kind)
  • You can clearly tell who the morning and evening show hosts are
  • "It's a marathon, not a race, to become the Radio King" - Vicki

Advice from the Listeners

"If you see wild random unexpected unplanned tomato plants growing in someone's yard, that's where the septic tank probably is. Tomato seeds aren't digestible in humans, and they can remain viable after being...passed."

Are Podcasts Radio?

"All podcasts have the ability to become a radio show, but not all radio shows could become a podcast"

  • Podcasts aren't new, they're basically just radio but with different distribution and monetization
  • The same thing that happened with music and Spotify happened with radio and Podcasts
  • Could we become a podcast?
    • Yes but it would require serious format changes
    • We'd need more of a shtick, more of a focus
  • Podcasts influence radio and vice versa
